    WEEKLY COMMENT

Every Tuesday we send out the MedComms Networking email newsletter to subscribers. It includes brief commentary on what we're doing and planning, and highlights relevant news to encourage sharing of information, experiences and ideas and to stimulate discussion. The text and links included below, by definition, were accurate on the day of publication, but may then become outdated.

    MedComms Networking - 07 May 2024

    Hi

Last week it was the 20th Annual Meeting of The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) #ISMPPAnnual2024 in Washington USA, swiftly followed over the weekend by ISPOR 2024 with the The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research #ISPOR24 in Atlanta USA. Today, #MedComms type folks are gathering in Valencia Spain for the 57th European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) conference #EMWA57.

    Has anyone managed all three?

I'm suffering from a strong sense of FOMO...

Events specialists say business is booming. But that many folks have returned to largely in-person events. "It's just simpler for everyone".

Doesn't that feel like a backwards step? I know it's great fun to meet and chatter and it's difficult - if not impossible - to replicate the serendipitous moments, but did we give up so easily? Clearly, virtual events will have a place. But I really thought "hybrid" would establish itself more fully. What about the asynchronous discussions and the genuine desire to share content afterwards for everyone's benefit?

At #ISMPPAnnual2024 Patient Engagement Expert and Advocate Trishna Bharadia dialled in for her session about the evolution of electronic product information and the 77 Posters have been made freely available.

At #ISPOR24 there's a Digital Conference Pass to view on-demand content after the event

This week some of the programme at #EMWA57 including Thursday's symposium AI in Medical Writing on Thursday, is available online.

But all that talk a couple of years ago, about the benefits from greater access and inclusivity, seems to have largely gone. What do you think?

Hopefully, the free #MedComms webinars will still help a little.

Tomorrow could be lively when we talk about using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate fit-for-purpose Plain Language Summaries (PLS) and hear about new data, hot off the press after #ISMPPAnnual2024 from Tom Grant (UCB), David McMinn (Sorcero), Walter Bender (Sorcero) and Laura Watts (Lumanity).

Next week, we'll talk about Driving Professional Development in Medical Communications: A Call to Action with Hannah Brocklehurst, Rebecca Douglas, Holly Oates and Helena Williams from IPG Health. The generational insights that Hannah will discuss were awarded the best original research at #ISMPPAnnual2024 last week, so that's also hot off the press!

Here's news of some other relevant upcoming activities I've spotted that might be also of interest to members of this community...

Here's a recording of last week's webinar from Costello Medical, How to Successfully Engage Patients in MedComms: A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective (or catch it anytime at NetworkPharma.tv)

Thinking differently: Exploring the benefits of welcoming neurodiversity across the healthcare communications industry" was published last week by PMLive.com and written by Mike Dixon of the Healthcare Communications Association (HCA)

Thomas Sullivan, in Policy and Medicine, has reported that a JAMA Analysis Finds Open Payments Database to Be "Not Much More than a Ledger Sheet"
